What is Diabetes?
Diabetes might just be the biggest epidemic in human history.
It is a metabolic disorder caused by too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. The body breaks down everything you eat, except for fat, into glucose. Glucose is the fuel that cells use to function. Insulin is a hormone that is made in the pancreas. In a healthy person, it regulates the amount of glucose moving from the bloodstream into the cells. In a diabetic person, the B-cells of the pancreas do not make enough insulin, (or stops making it altogether), or the body is unable to use the insulin effectively. As a result, there is a build-up of glucose in the blood, which may cause a cascade of other problems like kidney failure, damage to the eyes, nerves, and blood vessels.
Diabetes currently affects about 10% of the population. However, that percentage is growing exponentially every year. It is not just an old person’s illness either, as early onset diabetes is becoming alarmingly common amongst children.
